Aging Skin

  • What do you mean by skin aging?
Age leaves its traces everywhere, as we get older our skin loses its defense against wind, weather, sun, and oxygen deficiency. Skin ageing is a complex, progressive, deterioration of skin caused by intrinsic and extrinsic / environmental factors.
  • What are the causes of skin aging?
The causes of Aging can be divided into two categories: Intrinsic or chronological aging and extrinsic or premature aging.
Intrinsic Aging - Intrinsic ageing is a natural occurrence as age progresses. Dead skin cells do not shed as quickly, and turnover of new skin cells may decrease slightly. Extrinsic Aging - Extrinsic ageing is caused by external factors such as solar exposure, smoking and poor nutrition. These factors are responsible for premature ageing of the skin.
  • What are the signs of skin aging?
The signs of intrinsic aging are fine wrinkles, thin and transparent skin, loss of underlying fat leading to hollowed cheeks and eye sockets, bones shrink away from the skin due to bone loss resulting in sagging skin, inability to sweat sufficiently to cool the skin, graying hair that eventually turns white, hair loss, unwanted hair and thinner nails. External aging is seen as loss in tone and elasticity of skin along with increased skin fragility, benign lesions (keratoses and telangiectases).
  • What are the causes of Internal Aging?

Hormones - The most dramatic changes in woman's appearance take place around menopause years, when estrogen drop causes considerable loss of collagen, which is an important protein that makes up most of the skin's supportive structure. As a result, wrinkles appear and skin hangs loosely.

Heredity - Genetic factors dictate the rate at which skin ageing process progresses. If one or both of one's parents had youthful skin well into the old age, chances are one could inherit same characteristics.
  • How does Ultraviolet exposure contribute to skin aging?
The skin is equipped with an elaborate antioxidant system that protects it from oxidative damage due to intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Ultraviolet light generates free radicals, the major inducers of premature ageing. Cigarette smoking and other airborne pollutants also contribute to skin aging.
  • How does smoking cause skin aging?
Chronic smokers have pale, yellowish-grey skin. Cigarette smoking promotes the release of oxidants.Deep lines typically appear radially from the upper and lower lips and laterally from the eyes. There is relative skin thickening between these wrinkles.Oxidants slow the production of new collagen and elastin. Smoking also restricts the blood flow in the epidermis so skin does not get the quantity of nutrients it needs to stay healthy.
  • How can we prevent skin aging?
Avoiding extrinsic factors (using a sunscreen) can help postpone skin aging by a couple of years.

Judicious selection of a suitable antiaging cream can help reverse considerable damage by a couple of years.
Your dermatologist can then provide you an array of treatments available depending on your skin type, extent of skin aging and lifestyle.
The procedures than can be done are
  • What is the role of anti-oxidant creams in skin aging?
Topical antioxidants have been demonstrated to protect the skin from free radical damage and its regular application can actually reverse pervious photodamage.
  • What is the role of Vitamin E as an antioxidant?
The antioxidant activity of vitamin E protects the polyunsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes from oxidation and so protects cell membranes from destruction by free oxygen radicals. The use of topical cosmetics that contain Vitamin E can substantially increase the vitamin E content of the skin more effectively than even dietary supplementation. In addition, maintaining Vitamin E levels in the skin by topical formulas helps maintain the active forms of vitamin C and glutathione in the skin which are the chief anti-oxidants in our body.
  • How does Grape Seed Extract prevent aging?
Grape seed extract is extracted from Vitisvinifera and is rich in proanthocyanidins, which belong to the flavonoid family and are potent antioxidants with strong free radical scavenging activities than vitamins C and E.
  • Does the formulation of antiaging products matter?
Yes. Antioxidants are inherently unstable and hence their formulation decide if they are effective once out of the bottle. Most Vitamin C creams are ineffective after 1st application. However serums are effective. Polymer based preparations ensure maximum bio-availability.
